Work, Study, and Scholarship Opportunities For Duke Students of German

Before graduation:

  • Study Abroad Programs:

    • Duke-in-Berlin Fall and Spring semester programs.
      Become fluent in German, experience Europe, live with families or in dorms, get credit for Duke courses in German, Economics, History, Political Science, Art History. Courses at the Humboldt and Free Universities of Berlin; courses for engineers also available at the Technical University of Berlin.

    • Duke-in-Berlin Summer program.
      Improve your German skills, get credit for Duke courses, live in urban neighborhoods, travel around Europe. Scholarships available!

  • Summer Internships

    • Transatlantic Program (TAP) of the GACCoM
      This program offers a select group of up to 25 U.S. students the opportunity to gain practical work experience in a total immersion environment in Germany, Europe's largest economy. The program carefully matches each participant to internship positions throughout Germany in their respective fields of study, in particular business, economics, engineering and international relations. The TAP also provides participants with an intensive ten-day pre-internship Immersion Seminar in Berlin, including interactive language-building activities and intercultural training, and a Midterm Seminar in Cologne.

      Current Students and Recent Grads :

      • DAAD Summer Internship Program for Journalism Students : For the first six weeks of the program, participants will take part in a seminar series to expand their academic understanding of the politics, society and culture of Germany, and the country's current social conditions and media scene. The final five weeks consist of an intensive internship with a German newspaper, magazine, radio station or PR firm in or near Berlin. A complete program schedule will be available soon on the program website.

        Applicants must have at least "advanced intermediate" German skills to take part in the program, as the seminars and internships take place in the German language. http://www.daad.org/page/internxchange/

      After graduation:

      • Berlin Program Fellowship Program :The program offers fellowships to scholars in all social science and humanities disciplines, including historians working on modern and contemporary German and European history for a research period in Berlin between 10- 12 months. For more information
      • Robert Bosch Foundation Tutor Program: Get paid to spend a year interacting with German students interested in American culture while immersing yourself in German language and culture.
      • Landheim Schondorf: Spend a year practically cost-free tutoring English at a premier Bavarian boarding school.
      • Fullbright/DAAD Fellowships and Grants: for research projects in Germany.
      • Fullbright-Hayes Teaching Assistantships in Germany
      • Cornell Law School International Joint Degree Program: earn a J.D. / M.LL.P (Master of German and European Law and Practice) from Cornell and the Humboldt University in Berlin.
      • Kongress-Bundestag Student Exchanges
      • German Parlament Praktika: for students interested in international relations and politics; spend 5 months in Berlin.
      • Scholarship of the Studienstiftung des Abgeordnetenhauses von Berlin. Spend a year doing research on projects concerned with Berlin, German, or German-international questions.
      • Internships with Multinational Companies
